Mud Caves with Hot Springs

Mud Caves with Hot Springs

This was a rather interesting experience. Probably one of the highlights of my whole trip. A group of 9 of us that travelled down from Guilin together all hired bikes and cycled to the Mud caves.  This day really opened my eyes and we witnessed first hand how the they were trying to rip off foreigners.  In our group we had Chinese person who stood round the corner of the ticket booth and so they couldn’t see him. This was completely accidental. I asked the ticket women how much entry was and she was hesitant to respond, radioing her manager. The manager finally came and she asked him in Mandarin “What should we charge these westerners? 80 Yuan or 100 Yuan? He replied “No lets charge them 120 Yuan”. Which is £12! The Chinese guy turned the corner and jumped in saying “You do realise I can understand everything you’re saying…” The women went rather bright red and I got rather annoyed. With my limited mandarin I told her that because we are 9 people and she was rude I want it for 40 Yuan. Without hesitation she agreed.

We were told change before we went into the cave and so I stripped and put on my swimming short and flip-flops. The Mud caves are really deep down and you have to climb down various steps to get there. As I stood before the Mud I stuck my finger in there and took wift. The strong smell of sulphur took me by surprise. I slowly walked in feeling the mud on the bottom of my feet squish between my toes. I could see that everyone else was feeling the same as they had the scrunched up faces with the look of disgust. I finally immersed myself and as I lay down I was able to float on the surface like in dead sea. The mud as you can imagine was absolutely freezing and so after taking a hand full of photos we hopped in the even colder shower and had to spent forever trying scrub of the mud (which was impossible). As we carried walking down we spotted water steaming from a pool on the side of the cave. We jumped in and sure enough it was a hot spring. Extremely funny day and I really suggest anyone that goes to Yangshuo to go. Just be weary of the rip off woman and manager!
