Rickshaw scam Beijing

Rickshaw scam Beijing

Just came back from the Temple of Heaven. It was brilliant, however, afterwards I came out and got so lost. I was 4 km from the next subway station in the middle of nowhere. A guy on a Rickshaw approached me and asked me where I wanted to go. I was lost and it was getting late, so I decided against my gut feeling and accepted his offer to take me back to my hostel. Apart from nearly getting hit by cars numerous times the ride itself was fairly enjoyable. I made sure to agree a price before hand which was 4 CYN (40p). I already knew he would try and rip me off and charge me at least 40 CYN (4 Pounds). The ride was a good 30 minutes so I didn’t mind. When we got there I gave him 4RMB as we had initially agreed and he did exactly what I expected and said 40 CYN. Then when I gave him 40RMB to him he pulled out a card that said 300 CYN (30 Pounds!). With my limited Mandarin I told him he was crazy and walked off saying “xie xie lao shi.” (Thank You Teacher). He and passers-by burst out laughing as I had said “Lao Sh.” which is only said to teachers and not Rickshaw taxi drivers who try to rip you off. The reaction was exactly what I wanted and he drove past me saying “Duibuqi” (I’m sorry).
If people try to rip you off just stand your ground.
